Shamanism is the only religion indigenous to the Korean Peninsula, predating any other major belief system. Its ancient roots are probably why some Koreans still turn to shamans for guidance or comfort when facing life-changing events, or dealing with major illnesses or financial issues.
The Museum Of Shamanism The Museum of Shamanism (TMOS) was established in Seoul, Korea on May 2, 2013 as the first museum dedicated to shamanism education and research. Folklorist and shamanism specialist, Yang Jongsung, founder of the TMOS, was a senior curator at the National Folk Museum of Korea and an ICOM-ICME board member. Dr. Yang is now the director of TMOS, president of the Society for Shamanism Studies, and Chief Editor of the Journal of Shamanism Studies. After 3 years, 25th of May 2016, at its original venue, the museum moved to its new home at the Geumseongdang Shamanic Shrine, which is a designated National Folklore property in Eunpyeong-Gu, Seoul.
